The Story

Family Drama

CAMERA is the heartwarming story of loss, hope, and healing, following a mute 9-year-old — OSCAR — who just moved with his widowed mom to a struggling fishing town.  Picked on and bullied, nobody realizes that Oscar sees great beauty where others only see despair. Nobody, that is, until a broken camera brings him together with ERIC, an eccentric old repairman, and an unlikely friendship develops. Under Eric’s mentorship, Oscar finds his voice through photography, and in doing so, heals a wounded community.

Director’s Statement

“While my experience as a photographer convinced me to pick up the script, it was my experience as a father that kept me turning the page, and moved me beyond words. Having raised a daughter born with impaired speech it was easy for me to relate to the story’s young protagonist, Oscar, and the older man who sees his artistic potential and dedicates himself to sharing it with the world. Their friendship is the beating heart of CAMERA - and at a time when I - like so many of us - feel socially isolated and disconnected, this script restored my faith that life doesn’t have to be this way, and that positive change may come from the least assuming amongst us. Through the interplay between still images and moving ones, I want CAMERA to come alive, to be as real to the audience as a thinking, feeling organism, and for it to move them towards a brighter future after the picture fades to black.” - Jay Silverman

— Dawn Smith - Audience Viewer
Every once in a while, not very often in this high-tech, low-touch society, a film idea emerges from the heart of a filmmaker that captures the hearts of many. Camera is one of those films
— David Thompson - Audience Viewer
Wow, what an amazing film! Really moved me and even saw lots of my own personal story in this. Director Jay Silverman, young actor Miguel Gabriel and Beau Bridges were phenomenal in their approach to making this! A human story that touches the soul!
— James - Audience Viewer
Great film! Thank you for sharing the importance of mentorship. It makes life better for everyone!
— Christopher M. Allport - Audience Viewer
A wonderfully touching film. Every aspect was meticulously executed!
— Nick Omana - Audience Viewer
Beau Bridges, who could not of been better cast, had to have read the script, not with his head, but with his heart. An actor of his stature and acuity clearly does ‘know’ when something is truly right. He stepped into the supporting role of Eric to Miguel Gabriel’s Oscar, and let the magic happen. I will never forget it.
— LYNN HOLLINGSWORTH GEYER - AUDIENCE VIEWER
Beau Bridges, a reliable journeyman character actor, is offered one of his juiciest roles in years, and the 82-year-old proves he’s more than up for the challenge, playing Eric Conway with an undeniable soulfulness.
— Glen Starkey - New Times
A single photograph has the power to significantly impact a person’s life. Not just the viewer, but the artist who captures it.
